Lesson 2 covers the D chord and basic beginner techniques (there is no part one video - you have to read that!). It’s part of a complete video beginners guitar course that has all notes available for free from www.justinguitar.com. Just click on the Beginners tab on the left and learn guitar in progressive easy steps. This is the first video lesson and relates to lesson 2 in the course. Taught by Justin Sandercoe.

My fingers are kinda thick (I’m a bit older than the typical student) and I’ve found that it helps me to hold my thumb up closer to the head stock and my fingers at a bit more of an angle. Anyway, thanks for these lessons. I’ve been reading on your site for hours and I am impressed with how much detail you go into while explaining things, Thank You.

It’s ok that it hurts. Just don’t play too long in one time, it is better to play 30 minutes and then take a break. Eventually you’ll get used to it and it won’t hurt anymore!
    Good luck

    You are providing a …
You are providing a great service. Your horizontal neck position is not so great. An angled neck fixes so many problems. The weight of your left arm then provides weight for bar chords and you avoid the left wrist being bent and tense. An angle to the neck also enables your right thumb to be out of the way of your right hand fingers for fingerstyle playing. There are many ways to play but starting with a horizontal neck position is not going to help your students advance later.
